The Day of Ashura

  1. The Prophet never gave up fasting on this Day
“There are four things which the Prophet never gave up: Fasting ‘Ashura’, (fasting during) the ten days, (fasting) three days of each month, and praying two Rak’ahs before Al-Ghadah (Fajr).” (An nasai)
  2. It was the day of fasting before Ramadan
The people used to fast on ‘Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. (Bukhari)
  3. It is the day of Victory for Musa (AS)
When Allah’s Messenger ﷺ arrived at Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of ‘Ashura’. The Prophet ﷺ asked them about it and they replied, “This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh.” The Prophet ﷺ said (to the Muslims), “We are nearer to Moses than they, so fast on this day.” (Bukhari)
