Four Matters on Mahr

  1. The Mahr is an obligation of the Husband
    And give the women (upon marriage) their (bridal) gifts graciously. (4:4)
  2. Be moderate
    ‘Do not exaggerate in the dowries of women. If doing so was honourable in the world or Taqwa before Allah then Allah’s Prophet would have been the first of you to do it. [Tirmidhi]
  3. The Mahr is for the Bride, not the Father or Wali
    ‘Whatever is given as a dowry, or gift or is promised her before the marriage belongs to her.’ [Sunan an nasai]
  4. Mahr can be tangible wealth or in-kind
    “Marry, even with (a Mahr equal to) an iron ring.” (Bukhari)
    “How much Qur’an do you know? He said, ‘I know such and such Suras,” naming some Suras. The Prophet ﷺ said, “I marry her to you for the amount of Qur’an you know (by heart). (Bukhari)
